As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, I am getting the opportunity to write a little about my background and heritage. Thanks to the beautiful sterling silver charms at James Avery I am able to fully express who I am and where I am from.

I'm a little bit Texan and a little nopaluda. In between Tejano music and Banda. I know English but think in Spanish (super true). I love carne asada and I can eat Whataburger and pizza every day. I love Novelas and watch This is Us. It's like the scene from Selena (Yes, I went there.) "Being a Mexican-American is exhausting." You have to live in two very different worlds and somehow merge them very gracefully. 

My parents were born and raised in Mexico. In the 80's they came to Texas, Brenham/Navasota area to be exact. I was born and then we moved to Houston, when I was in the 7th grade we moved down to South Texas, or what is known as the Rio Grande Valley. My identity since I was born has been both Texan and Mexican. Mexican-American. I was taught to speak, think and feel in Spanish before I even learned English. Being Bilingual is also a big part of my identity.

My love for both sides of the border has always existed. Over the years it's grown. I will admit being a young Mexican-American in the US, was not easy in the sense that I was always so embarrassed to bring my non-Mexican friends around. My parents (and whole entire family) were "super Mexican" whatever that means, right? Now in my 30's and with kids of my own, I find myself missing my parents home and all of our food, family, traditions, and way of life. I do everything possible to not only continuously embrace my heritage and culture but also further learn about it and teach it to my children.

Growing up I had the opportunity to visit and travel to Mexico quite often with my parents and sometimes spent months there over the Summer. As an adult, I have also traveled to certain regions of Mexico. The absolute richness of its culture, its food, the heart and passion that Mexico has to survive is something that I hope to one day share with my children. Right now Mexico is a distant place for them but they know exactly where their GrandParents were born and how great being Mexican can be. I have always strived to teach them about both our Texas/American culture and way of life as well as that of being Mexican. I think they understand it well. Of course, they see and know the Texas side a lot more but when they get older I hope to take them to Mexico where they can experience it all first hand.

In the meantime, I love being able to continuously express who I am through the beautiful and customizable accessories that James Avery creates. There are so many pieces that I know I need and am obsessed with.

Su Salud es Importante #AseguraTuSalud

Back when I was in my 20's, there was a period of time when I was a full-time college student, missed the school deadline to get health insurance and tried to apply for several others. I never got a response. I was in school full-time for a whole year. It wasn't unit after I was engaged, in almost December of that year to my Hubby, that he was able to place me on his insurance, since we lived together. By then a whole year since my last check-up had passed and by the time I was able to get to a doctor, I had a tumor the size of a grapefruit behind my uterus and ovaries. I had almost an emergency surgery to remove a possible malignant tumor. Thankfully it was benign and the doctor had good hopes for my chances of being able to have children. Things could have gone totally different. I was young, didn't think it would be such a big deal to be without health insurance, after that year I have never been without insurance again! And, as the years go by I believe more and more that being without health insurance is a risk and health hazard. I urge those who need insurance to find the time to complete the necessary information. Learning from my experience is a good opportunity to help others move forward and be covered so that their health doesn't suffer.

Tres razones por las que deberías inscribirte a Obamacare antes del 31 de marzo…

La Ley de Cuidado de Salud Asequible (ACA) ha traído grandes cambios en los seguros médicos para los consumidores.

Probablemente ya estés enterado de algunos de los puntos relevantes, como que las compañías de seguros ya no pueden rechazar a las personas o cobrarles más por condiciones preexistentes, que los adultos jóvenes se pueden quedar en el seguro de sus padres hasta que tengan 26 años y que ya no hay límites de por vida en las pólizas de seguro.

Sin embargo, para las personas que no están aseguradas o que tienen que comprar su propio seguro (en vez de obtenerlo de su empleador o de Medicare), hay factores importantes en la nueva ley que tal vez no conozcas. Los nuevos Mercados de Seguros Médicos estatales ya están abiertos, pero como el período de inscripciones abiertas se termina en marzo, es importante que te enteres de cómo estos factores te pueden afectar.

Estas son tres razones importantes por las que debes inscribirte antes del 31 de marzo:

Después del 31 de marzo, no podrástener cobertura de salud hasta el próximo año

A diferencia de años anteriores, la mayoría de los consumidores solo podrán comprar seguro médico privado durante el Período de Inscripciones Abiertas. Excepto en circunstancias específicas especiales, solo puedes comprar cobertura para este año hasta el 31 de marzo, ya sea que compres a través del Mercado de Seguros Médicos de tu estado o fuera de él. Este es un cambio muy importante a diferencia del pasado.

Aún tienes la libertad de cambiar tu plan de salud cada año si así lo quieres, pero tienes que esperar. Las inscripciones abiertas para el año próximo van a empezar el 15 de noviembre de 2014 y van a durar hasta el 15 de enero de 2015. Pero la cobertura que compres durante este período solo empezará a ser efectiva hasta el 1º de enero de 2015. Para decirlo sencillamente, si no te inscribes para el 31 de marzo de 2014, no tendrás cobertura médica hasta al menos el 1º de enero de 2015.

¿Qué constituye un “evento de vida que califique” para cambiar tu cobertura fuera de las Inscripciones Abiertas? Los consumidores tendrán 60 días para hacer un cambio si:

• Tienen un bebé o un cambio en su estado civil.

• Pierden su plan existente, por ejemplo, si dejan un empleo.

• Tienen un cambio en sus ingresos que los hace nuevamente elegibles o nuevamente inelegibles para recibir créditos fiscales para reducir el costo de sus primas.

• Se mudan a otro estado del país.

• Tienen un aumento en sus ingresos que los hace a ellos o, a un miembro de la familia,  inelegibles para recibir Medicaid o CHIP.

• Se vuelven “presentes legalmente” en Estados Unidos al obtener una tarjeta verde u otra visa a largo plazo no de turista.

            • Salen de la cárcel.

¿Qué no califica? Enfermarse y de repente necesitar cuidados médicos urgentes. Por  eso es tan importante obtener cobertura ahora.

Tal vez estés dejando pasar la oportunidad de dinero gratis para el seguromédico.

Más de tres cuartas partas de las personas que han comprado un plan a través de su Mercado de Seguros Médicos van a recibir asistencia financiera para pagar sus primas, según el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos. Es muy posible que tú seas uno de ellos.

Según sea el tamaño y los ingresos de tu familia, al vez puedas reducir tu prima mensual por medio de un crédito de impuestos llamado el “Crédito Fiscal para Primas de Salud por adelantado”. Por ejemplo, una familia de 4 con ingresos de hasta $94,000 podría calificar para recibir ayuda. Si no revisas esto, podrías dejar pasar la oportunidad de recibir este dinero que te ayude a pagar el seguro. Para  ver de manera rápida y fácil si podrías calificar visita AseguraTuSalud.org.

Nota: Si tu ingreso es bastante bajo, tú o tus hijos pueden ser elegibles para recibir los programas de Medicaid y CHIP, subsidiados por el gobierno, para los estadounidenses de más bajos recursos. Estos programas están exentos del período de inscripciones abiertas y te puedes apuntar en cualquier momento.

Esperar al último minuto puededejarte sin nada  

La inscripción a los nuevos planes de seguros se ha incrementado notablemente desde que el sitio web inicial tuvo problemas, pero aún hay millones de consumidores que necesitan revisar sus opciones y no quieres verte envuelto en la locura de andar comprando en el último momento.

Además, si  te interesa obtener cobertura que empiece antes del 1º de mayo  vas a necesitar actuar más pronto. Los planes de seguros comprados después del 15 de marzo te pueden dejar esperando hasta el 1º de mayo para que la cobertura empiece a actuar. Los resultados del retraso de las dos semanas que se necesitan para procesar las aplicaciones y los planes de seguro tienden a empezar el 1º día del mes.

También te aconsejamos que tengas bastante tiempo, hasta varios días, para tomar tu decisión.

Dependiendo de dónde vivas tal vez haya varias opciones de planes diferentes de los que puedas escoger con deducibles variables, copagos, redes de doctores y primas mensuales. Es importante revisar esas opciones con cuidado y no en la penúltima hora antes de que se cierre el período de inscripciones abiertas.

Tu sabes! Si lo sabes, es porque creciste con el!

Pimpon! El muñeco guapo y de carton! Ha.

We found this really cheesy video of Pimpon but Camila loves it..as you can tell in the video of her dancing to it. Ha. 

My kids are learning not just Spanish but also songs that my Husband and I grew up with. Ever since they were little we sang songs like Pimpon to them. I found el Raton Vaquero, y El Chorrito which were songs that I heard as a child....Cri-Cri, el grillito cantor was created by Francisco Gabilondo Soler in 1934 and was a household name in Mexico but trust me we grew up in Texas and Michigan and Cri-Cri came with us every where we went! All I know is that my Grandmother is very proud of the fact that my kids speak Spanish and can sing along to songs that she taught us growing up!


Now that I am home with Camila, I am going to use the magical place of Youtube to show her more songs. This is the kind of music I grew up with and although it's totally outdated it was what brought about our transcending culture and consistent traditions that I hope to pass along to my children. 

Later in life came my absolute Love for these two men... el Bueno, MUY BUENO! Y el Malo, MUY MALO! Ha.



Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete were one of a kind and I used to watch them along with Elvis, day in and day out...yes also not part of my era but very well known and loved in our home. And, one more only because I LOVE this song!!!



If you know. It's cause you grew up with them... the way I did.

{Traditions in Faith} ♥

When it comes to traditions they are deeply rooted in my background. Our Mexican culture and most definitely in our Catholic faith. I want my children to grow up with these same traditions, culture, memories and faith.

I think I have stated it before as I was growing up I didn't understand my faith. It was when I was an adult that I learned to embrace it and ultimately love it. I want my children to learn more about our faith than I did growing up. My parents followed the Catholic faith and just assumed that we should as well. But, I want to go that extra step and have faith and explain why we do what we do.

One of my biggest goals is Christmas. To ensure my children that there is more to opening presents and gift giving. That there is family, selfless-ness and faith as well as Love in every Christmas that we celebrate. That we are celebrating our faith in the birth of Jesus Christ. That we are followers of Mary and Joseph. That their pilgrimage to seek a safe haven to birth the Saviour was a long one filled with struggles and obstacles but that they ultimately found the most humble and faith-filled place for Jesus to be born and to be honored as the light and salvation of our lives.

The Vocabulary Game

The Pediatrician gave Santi until January to speak. Literally. He has words, now some phrases but more than half the time I get that blank stare of "Mom, don't you know what I'm saying?" the sad truth is that, I don't know what Santi is saying half the time. It result in total frustration. I end up sad cause I am a horrible Momma..or so I think. He ends up frustrated because he knows what he is trying to tell me but I have no clue.

He has many words, and phrases most of which I know. The few that remain an enigma are the ones that I just wish I had a baby translator for. Santi is to our impression fully bilingual at this point. We speak to him in English at home and with his Grandmother{ who cares for him Monday thru Friday 7am to 7pm} he speaks only Spanish. It's what we wanted for him, so him staying at home with her and now Cami has been more than a Blessing. We want Santi to be fully bilingual but not sure how much that is really affecting him when it comes to getting the words across.

I am trying everyday more and more to hold full conversations with him. We read together. He is more than fully engaged and really surprises us most days when he seems to be responding and answering our questions.

My Husband and I have gotten in the habit of asking him how his day went, what he did and who he was with all the day. He does pretty well but January is around the corner and I don't know what else to do for him..when time is of the essence.

My next step is labeling and flashcards. We shall see....

Cosas del Amor ♥

{For all my Spanish readers.... }

En cuanto a mi matrimonio, no digo que somos perfectos pero si somos quienes somos. Ricardo es su propia persona, al igual que yo. Nos conocimos hace 12 años, hemos pasado por muchos momentos tristes, felices, de madures, de amor, de fe, de aprendizaje, de estrés. Pero todos los días, un día a la vez. Hemos tenido 2 hermosos angelitos de Dios, y casi siempre estamos super ocupados; con nuestros trabajos, Ricardo con la escuela y yo con los ninños y  mi casa. Tratamos de pasar tiempo en familia, porque por 10 años convivimos como pareja…y cuando se puede nos tratamos de escapar solitos. Pero preferimos estar con Santi y Cami.

Cuando nos casamos éramos; ehhh, jóvenes, él tenía 27 y yo 25, pero los últimos 5 años yo se que hemos madurado individualmente y crecido como pareja. Yo creo que como “crecimos” juntos hemos podido ayudarnos a enfrentar nuestras faltas, debilidades e defectos al igual que corregirlos. Les repito cada quien es su propia persona pero juntos.Se entiende?

Todos los dias son diferentes y cada dia lo tratamos como un nuevo dia. Lo de ayer se olvida y se perdona y lo de hoy se aprende y se sobrepasa!

Quisas lo que quiero decir es que en cosas del amor, todas, y todos, somo diferentes. Pero lo mas importante es ser fiel a la comunicacion, a su pareja y al respeto. No todo mundo se tiene que casar "como lo manda Dios", el matrimonio es algo MUY serio y es algo que quizas no sea para todos, pero para nosotros a funcionado muy bien. Hay muchas parejas que nunca se casan ni por el civil, ni por la iglesia... y estan muy bien, pero repito respeto, comunicacion y fidelidad, es lo mas esencial en cada relacion!



En Cosas del Amor, yo estoy muy bendecida... pero no todo en mi vida ha sido facil... como dicen..no todo es color de rosa... y el que quiere azul celeste...QUE LE CUESTE!

I am sitting at UH in the computer lab tonight and YES I am a proud COOG HA, it's late, I'm delirious. Anyway a fellow Coog Blogger, also told me to think about it before I actually went through with it....I am stuck! Input please...but in the mean time....}

Gracias A Dios!!!

Ha sido una semana larguísima! Me eh sentido muy mal y los días se me hacen eternos...así que, saber que mañana es Sábado y que no me tengo que despertar temprano me hace sentir feliz!!!

Mi esposo ha estado súper ocupado con la escuela, son las 9:21pm, y todavía estamos en la universidad tratando de terminar su "speech" acerca del DREAM Act para mañana. Le toco estar en contra. Se nos ha hecho un “poco” difícil pero creo que va estar preparado para su presentación. 

Mis hijos están en casa de su Abuela, y los extrañamos tanto que al escribir esto, se me hace un nudo en la garganta! Espero que cuando vayamos por ellos estén dormido...PERO...creo que los vamos a despertar… Solo para verlos un ratito!!! 

In all it's been a hectic week...time disappears and sorrows seem to fade. The pain is still there {we MISS my Aunt beyond belief} please keep my family from Detroit in your prayers. They are experiencing the grief that I can't begin to imagine.
