::Hidden Figures:: Movie Review

This is not paid content and the review is something that came to me because I am super passionate about the things I love!

{Image Credit: Google Search/Patheos Site}

I finally saw the movie Hidden Figures, and I knew it would be good and I knew I would like it. I mean empowering women of color is in my DNA, right? But, I didn't realize that I would identify so much of myself to the main character of this movie.  Katherine; an educated woman of color who is always overlooked, looked past and through. As a Mexican-American woman in corporate America since 1999, I have had similar experiences in the workplace. No matter how hard you work, someone else always gets the credit. That, someone else, is usually not a person who cares to work as hard as you because of their position of entitlement, which I find sad.

The notion that you're invisible and irrelevant to your employer even though you're the one getting the work done is one that I have lived with for over 10 years now. Even though I have been in "high ranking" positions, it hasn't been an easy task to accomplish and it also doesn't guarantee truly being recognized or appreciated as much as others. While I definitely DON'T know the extent of racism that these incredible NASA professionals experienced, I have felt the inequality of gender and race in most of my positions and as a culture in the companies I work for.

Please don't get me wrong, this isn't a moment of self-pity or for others to feel sorry for me. Nor is it a complaint or bashing of any current situation in our nation. But, instead, an eye opener. That again, the extent and overt racism experienced by the female "computers" of NASA in the 1960's, still may linger in very low key ways and places where we least expect them. Not too much has changed for women in the workplace, while it is "better" there are still so many barriers we must overcome. And, we will overcome them. {i.e. Women's March 2017}

                                                              {Image Credit: Google Search/Hollywood Reporter Site}

There were moments in the movie where I could NOT hold back my tears. The first pivotal moment was when Katherine had to explain where she was 40 minutes of every day. No one knew her struggle and most overlooked the things that blared out to her. The fact that her boss was so busy he didn't see the barriers she faced, was truly no excuse, but I loved that he was the first one to take action and make those barriers less. I cried so much, I have been there. In white male dominated industries, where the issues a woman may have are not important to them, yet we get our work done and move forward with the pains and barriers we carry.

Another moment where I felt truly happy and empowered was when Mary explained why the judge should grant her the ability to attend an all-white school. Of course, as you can see at this point, as women, we are always required to defend who we are and why we want to do things to improve our lives. But, that's OK, we endure and move forward. Mary's story is one that as a Momma and Wife, I struggle with, should we go back to school and better ourselves? The answer of course is YES, the issue of when the time is right will never happen. We remain busy and there will never be a better time, than now! I loved her boldness and strength.

{Image Credit: Google Search/CNN Site}

And, the final moment that made me just fill with awe and admiration for these women was when Dorothy became supervisor of the newly formed IBM group and walked into the IBM room with her entire group of "colored computers". She was proof that when you resist you persist.

If you have not seen this movie, I recommend it for everyone. To me it was empowering for women of all ages and races. I watched it with my kids, and they knew so much about segregation, being of color and Martin Luther King Jr. that they followed along very well. When Dorthy walked into that IBM room, Santiago said.. "MOM, SHE DID IT!!!" I explained to Camila that because these women were smart, brave and strong they succeeded; she asked if she should be that way in school, to which I replied YES. You should!

It is in these moments that we should teach our children both boys and girls, to stand firm in what they believe in, to truly follow their dreams and passions and to be BRAVE and stand strong together! I know my kids received the message. They are learning about what it's like to be brown in America, I want them to know their place, to claim what is theirs and to never be scared to be themselves! Regardless of their skin color or gender, they know that if they are strong and brave they will succeed, it's what I plan to instill in them!

::Why Zootopia is a must see for your Family::

A feel good, all-around family friendly movie. It's what Zootopia is. And, a little truth of how conditioned my brain is. An ugly truth at that. I had no clue about this movie or what it was about, my son saw it on his first movie field trip with his class last week but I had no clue. I knew it was about a bunny who wants to be a cop, confession I thought the bunny was male. Why? Becuase it's what my brain is used to. A dumb assumption on my part, I know.

But, the movie did not disappoint. We went Sunday early afternoon since we had $5 tickets to Studio Movie grill from Groupon and they were about to expire. And, even though my son had seen the movie the rest of us had not. He tried not to spoil too many parts, exept every part he remembered as the movie played. I feel this movie captured it all, from some of the best God Father references to Shakira's hips that don't lie.

A "far-fetched" (My Husband reminds me, it's a cartoon, Connie.) child's movie, about a bunny cop, Lt. Judy Hopps, who believes anything is possible. Then proves that, yes, with respect, bravery and confidence ANYTHING is possible if we simply try. Trying and never giving up, believing in yourself and acceptance of all "animal" (human) kind is an eye-opening message that in a way brings forth the truth of current reality. While it might be easy to sometimes fall back into "old habits" that might seem, "biological" or nature driven, truth is we have evolved and we can and should move forward into a better world. Yes, a world that is messy and requires work but one that is worth hustling for!

We loved the movie. Adults can learn so much. Great lessons to learn for the whole family. We laughed even after the movie was over. The topics were all very fitting of the times we live in.

::My top 5 reasons for loving Zootopia::

1. Female Empowerment- Lt. Judy Hopps is a beautiful, strong and brave female bunny who will not give up on her dreams. What a perfect message to send to all little girls and children as a whole, that they can be anyone they want to be. And, a perfect reminder to us as Mommas to continue to feed those dreams!

2. A message of Acceptance and Inclusion-  Zootopia is a city where everyone is welcomed and accepted. The reality is that we must move forward together, as humans, to make this world a better place! We must accept those around us and know that we are ALL capable of great things!

3. Be Brave and follow your Heart-  I know that we are all born with special talents or skills, as my Cami likes to call them. We also all have a specific and unique purpose to fulfil, with an innate nature to do those things that need to be done to reach our goals and simply be ourselves. Part of being brave and filling this purpose involves listening to your heart and following it, where ever it may take you. Zootopia reminds us of such a wonderful heartfelt message.

4. Never Giving up!- Success isn't always about winning. You will fail and what's important is that you get right back up and push forward. Judy Hopps wasn't the best at everything but with hard work and constant dedication she proved herself to be a very worthy cop regardless of her size and what others thought of her because she never gave up.

5. Being kind and standing by your friends- Being a good person and backing up your friends are simple rules that will take you a long way. Supporting and believing in those around you when others don't believe in them, makes you a great friend! Building lasting friendships that revolve around trust and honesty is important for anyone as they grow.

I hope you get to see it with your kids... just a great overall family movie! Will definitely be buying this one!

::The Good Dinosaur:: #moviereview #ad

               ::Momma Disclosure:: This is a compensated post. All statements are my true and honest opinion.

You've never seen Dinosaurs quite like the kind in "The Good Dinosaur". They aren't from around these parts. Or maybe they are. So, the best question to ask here is, do you like westerns? Because that's what you will get with this movie. It had all the components of a good western movie, kind of. It had a farm with Dinosaur farmers and outlaw villains and some herding cowboy Dinosaurs too! Trust me, it's like nothing you have seen before. It is an adventure for sure.

The movie begins when with Arlo's birth, from that moment his Dad knew he would be destined for greatness. His size didn't really reflect it, but deep down inside as a parent you always know. The lesson for the parents; sometimes we push our children too much. We want them to do so much that we don't allow them to seek and find their own destiny. If we just step back a bit and allow them to find their way they will eventually make their own mark in this life.  Arlo along with his new friend Spot, a Neanderthal boy embarks on a journey where he will learn to face his fears. Fears that he learns don't have to be overcome but conquered.

The movie has so many great moments that teach us the value of family and friendships and how fragile life can be. But, Arlo and Spot become best friends and together they can handle anything or anyone that comes their way. Filled with many wild and kooky characters the movie made us laugh, made us cry and made us feel proud. Arlo finds a way to leave his mark and returns home safely to help his family with the harvest before winter begins.

My kids enjoyed it very much, it will be one that we find on DVD. We even found a real life Spot! It is a family friendly movie and the 3D effects are the best.

:: Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos:: #HuevoCartoon

It was an on and off rainy day in Houston last Saturday during our Labor Day weekend. We were feeling a little lazy so we planned a late, LATE showing of a new movie. We had seen the previews for it and then my Husband made it into areal life plan for us to go watch it. He showed the kids preview after preview so they would get excited. Well that didn't take long and after 8 hours of "Mom is it Movie time yet?", we finally made it. The theater filled quickly and a little unexpected for a 10pm showing of an all Spanish movie on a Saturday night. We secured seats and snacks.

Now a little background on the Spanish language in our home. My Husband and I are completely fluent we can speak, read and write it. My kids started off fluent and my son has now started to fall off wagon.  But, my Cami has started to catch on strong. Santiago, doesn't like to be left behind so has also started to try and speak more Spanish and of course they both understand it. Our families both speak Spanish, all the time. You must at least understand around us. We definitely try to work on it and often get the kids to speak more Spanish around the house. I personally have a bad habit of speaking English at home. One that I need to break if I want my children to keep learning Spanish.

Back to the movie. The humor was on point and very much for adults. But, when isn't it. I heard more adults laugh than kids most the night. It's pretty funny. If you offend easily, it might not be for you. My children understood the overall message of true bravery and overcoming your fears to reach your goals. The jokes, went right over their heads. They did laugh at the funny moments; like when el Gallito, Toto was being trained to become a Gallo de pelea to help save their ranch.

Y los Huevos? Well those Eggs were on a whole other level, if you know the eggs from their YouTube stardom then you know what to expect. But, yes the concept is very funny and the overall message is a strong one. To be courageous no matter how insignificant or weak you might think you are.  Hay que tener huevos para ganar!

Not to make it any less but if you are reading the subtitles to this movie, it won't be the same. The literal translations and absence of translation, will not be as funny. There is nothing like knowing the language, understanding the comedy and enjoying it. I give it BIG Huevos for a great new Spanish comedy movie!

Seems that these days the "Woman Power" movies have me hooked. Of course! Who doesn't love women kicking butt and taking names? It truly inspires me. I too feel empowered to take over and overcome. Stepping outside of the cookie cutter manipulated community that she lives in Tris is now doing everything possible to save her family and herself. Filled with obstacles and complications she is determined to be the hero of her own story. I love it.

::Cantinflas, La Pelicula:: #Cantinflas

::Momma of Dos:: { This is not a compensated post. I received a free ticket to the press screening of Cantinflas and an invitation to interview Oscar Jaenada in collaboration with Latina Bloggers Connect. The opinions expressed are my own. }
